Democrats in Nevada recently took a stand after so-called democratic socialists won party leadership positions, as moderate Democrats and far-left leftists continue to struggle for the party’s identity.
The entire workforce of the Nevada Democratic Party resigned over the weekend after the party’s leadership was won by far-left progressives.
Far-left progressives secured every leadership position in Saturday’s elections, a total of five. The Democratic Socialists of America backed the candidates, and all but one of the winning candidates is a DSA dues-paying member.
The current leadership resigned, according to The Intercept. The entire workforce, including contractors, resigned unexpectedly.
The Intercept reports:
Shortly after Judith Whitmer was elected chair of the Nevada Democratic Party on Saturday, she received an email from Alana Mounce, the party’s executive director. Mounce started her message with a note of congratulations before moving on to her main point.
She was announcing her retirement. Any other employee was in the same boat. All of the consultants were as well. And, thank you very much, the workers will be taking severance checks with them.
“I knew I couldn’t work with her and watch her ruin the years of hard work so many operatives put into making our state party the best state party in the world,” one staffer told The Intercept anonymously.
According to The Intercept, democratic socialists’ victory was made possible by activists who operated on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign in 2016. Over the last few years, they’ve continued to create momentum where it counts, allowing them to win on Saturday.
What’s the backstory?
Although progressives seem to be gaining ground in some states, there is still a sharp divide within the Democratic Party’s power structures on which way the party should go.
Although Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wishes to push her party further to the left, moderate Democrats claim this will be catastrophic for the party.
Many Democrats, including Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), claim that far-left policies like “defund the cops” and “open borders” are to blame for the party’s losses in the 2020 election.
After the election, Spanberger reportedly said, “We need to be pretty straightforward.” “It was a flop.” It did not go well. We’ve lost some amazing members of Congress.
“We must vow never to use the words ‘defund the police’ again,” she said. “The terms socialist and socialism must never be used again.”
